Ronnie O'Sullivan successfully defended his Premier League snooker title with a 6-0 whitewash of Stephen Hendry in Manchester.
The world number one never quite hit the heights of his dazzling performance against Steve Davis in the semi-finals, but he didn't have to as Hendry's touch deserted him.
O'Sullivan rattled in four century breaks to beat Davis 5-3 on Saturday, and although there was no repeat of that magic in the final, it was a one-sided contest.
One year ago, O'Sullivan whitewashed Mark Williams in the final and he underlined his status as the best player in the game with another dominant display.
He was the first out of the traps, putting together a frame-winning break of 97 after Hendry had rattled the jaws with an attempt at a long red.
Hendry had three chances to hit back in the second frame, but after establishing a 50-point lead, he was well off target with a pink off its spot.
O'Sullivan hit back with a break of 49 but failed to get position on the blue, allowing Hendry another chance to level the match.
However, after potting the blue, the Scot missed another straightforward pink and this time O'Sullivan made him pay.
A scrappy third frame also went the way of the two-time world champion and Hendry failed to score in the fourth as O'Sullivan won in two visits.
Hendry's cueing continued to trouble him in the fifth - O'Sullivan opened up with a run of 33 before a rare mistake handed his opponent an opportunity he was unable to profit from.
The formalities were then completed in the sixth frame, as Hendry saw his last chance of salvaging some pride disappear when he missed a makeable brown.
O'Sullivan stepped in to take the frame and with it the first prize of ?50,000 to add to the ?33,000 he had pocketed during the league stage of the tournament. |
