Australia's Neil Robertson dominated play to take a 6-2 lead over Andrew Higginson after the first session of the Welsh Open final in Newport.
The left-hander, hoping to add the title to his Grand Prix crown, fired in a break of 76 to win the first frame.
Higginson replied with a break of 114 in the second frame.
But Robertson won five of the next six and will need just three more frames to take the title and £35,000 first prize when the match resumes at 1930 GMT.
Higginson, 29, looked in good form after notching up his eighth century break of the tournament in the second frame.
But he was punished for some sloppy mistakes as Robertson, 25, forged into a commanding position with breaks of 71, 98 and 74.
Robertson also had luck on his side in a fifth frame he stole with a last red to pink clearance following an outrageous fluke.
Higginson won the last frame of the session to stop the rot, but the qualifier will need to find his top form in the evening session.
