Lawrence Dallaglio could be on the verge of a dramatic recall to the England side for Saturday's clash against South Africa.
The World Cup winner has not started for his country for two and a half years but could be set to return as captain for the first of back-to-back Tests against the Springboks.
Under pressure coach Andy Robinson is considering turning to the veteran back-row in an effort to arrest England's slide and help save his own job.
Captain Martin Corry could make way for the 34-year-old Wasps skipper, while out-of-form fly-half Charlie Hodgson could also miss out.
The RFU's elite rugby director Rob Andrew admits England's lack of on-pitch leadership was a major factor in Saturday's dismal 25-18 defeat against Argentina.
"We need to look at leadership and selection," said Andrew.
"There were some directional issues at the weekend, and I am not just talking about the captain, but about all the other leaders on the pitch as well. These have to be resolved.
"Andy has been looking at the leadership issue for the last 18 months and, again, I would stress it's not all about the captaincy but all the players making decisions on the pitch and their key roles.
"Leadership is a major area for any team. We have to address it and try to improve it.
"We are looking at all sorts of issues during this period that actually go towards making up a really top-quality side. Results speak for themselves, and therefore that suggests things aren't right."
And Andrew believes England need to put in a "massive performance" against South Africa to lift the current gloom over Twickenham and English rugby in general.
"The support at Twickenham has been outstanding down the years," he said. "The players and the coaches have a big responsibility, and it is now down to them.
"We need a massive performance from the players and the crowd on Saturday to give England a huge lift, because it is required."
