Denver Broncos delivered Baltimore Ravens their first defeat of the season as defense dominated in wet and windy conditions at Invesco Field Mile High.
The Broncos overcame the previously undefeated Ravens and their highly-rated defense 13-3 courtesy of two field goals from Jason Elam, one in each half, and a 4th quarter touchdown pass from Jake Plummer to Rod Smith. Matt Stover kicked the Ravens' only points in the first quarter.
The pre-match talk was of Baltimore's stingy defense but it was more than matched by Denver who intercepted Ravens' quarter back Steve McNair three times and sacked him twice.
Two of those interceptions came in the final quarter with Baltimore looking to take their unbeaten run to five matches with the game tied at three all.
First up second year cornerback Darrent Williams picked off McNair's short pass left in the direction of Mark Clayton and on the following drive Plummer found Smith in the end zone with a short pass on second and goal.
On Baltimore's following drive Dominqiue Fozworth again intercepted a McNair pass intended for Clayton on the Denver 34-yard line with only 58 second remaining and Plummer took a knee with the next play to seal the Broncos' success.
Denver have now concdeded only one touchdown in four matches as they moved to 3-1 alongside San Diego Chargers in AFC West and the strength of their defense is raising hopes of a strong season.
Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey, who caught Denver's other interception in his own end zone, said: "We've got a good defense too, I think we proved that tonight. I think we've started something good and we're going to take it one game at time."
Quarterback Plummer added: "It was a team effort, we stuck together. It was ugly for a while but in the end we came and put together some drives when it counted."
Baltimore remain in a strong position in the AFC North at 4-1, one game ahead of Cincinatti Bengals.
In week six improving Carolina travel to Maryland to take on the Ravens while Denver have a great chance of moving to 4-1 as they host the 1-4 Oakland Raiders.
