| Pompey sign Kiely from Charlton |
Portsmouth's January spending spree has continued with the capture of keeper Dean Kiely from Charlton.
Pompey chief Harry Redknapp has added a raft of players to his squad following the arrival of Russian benefactor Alexandre Gaydamak, with Kiely being the latest to join the Fratton Park revolution.
Kiely had slipped down the pecking order at The Valley this term, having been the number one for Alan Curbishley for the last six years, and he will hope the change of scenery can revive his career.
The 35-year-old will have to force his way past Sander Westerveld and Jamie Ashdown in the pecking order, but is being tipped to don the keeper's jersey against Liverpool in the FA Cup at the weekend.
Redknapp has expressed delight at adding an experienced keeper to his relegation-threatened squad.
"This is a good addition because every club likes a strong goalkeeping team," Redknapp told the club's website.
"Dean Kiely's record in the Premier League speaks for itself. I think in the five seasons he has kept goal for Charlton they have not finished below 14th and he has been a virtual ever present for most of that time.
"Dean seemed to have gone down the order at Charlton but I think Alan Curbishley will be the first to acknowledge the tremendous service and level of performance he has given to a solid Premier League outfit."
Redknapp has dismissed the notion that Kiely is in the veteran stage of his career.
"The great thing him being a keeper is that at 35 he is just coming to his prime," added the Pompey boss.
"Jamie Ashdown has been great for me and having someone so experienced around can only bring him on because he is a very good young keeper in a difficult situation." |
