| Arsenal beat Chelsea in Diaby transfer |
Arsenal have confirmed they have signed Auxerre midfielder Vassiriki Diaby for an undisclosed fee.
The France Under-19 international has played just three times for Auxerre this season but has nevertheless shown sufficient promise for Arsene Wenger to secure his services.
Diaby, a powerful midfielder in the mould of the departed Patrick Vieira, is believed to have cost Arsenal in the region of £2 million in a move that has delighted Wenger.
"He is a strong midfielder and has shown huge potential during his time at Auxerre,'' said Wenger.
''He will be a tremendous addition to our squad."
Wenger will be further enthused by the player's decision to spurn the advances of Chelsea, who also offered the player a four-year deal according to Auxerre vice-president Gerard Bourgoin.
"The choice belonged to Diaby, but Arsene Wenger was better than Jose Mourinho, that's all," said Bourgoin.
Diaby has confirmed that Arsenal's impressive tradition played its part in his decision, admitting that he is excited by the prospect by moving to North London.
"I am so happy to have signed for Arsenal,'' said Diaby.
"The club has a great history and a squad which is full of high-quality players.
"This is a very exciting time for me and I am looking forward to a successful career here."
