Zinedine Zidane has spoken for the first time about France's World Cup qualification, berating several critics in the process.
France ensured a trip to Germany in 2006 with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Cyprus, but were criticised in some quarters for what was perceived to be muted celebrations.
Zidane has reacted angrily to these suggestions, claiming such talk is ridiculous and that on the contrary, both himself and his team-mates are ecstatic about the prospect of the World Cup.
''We are all very happy with the qualification as it was the aim,'' Zidane told L'Equipe.
''I didn't talk so far because a lot of things were said after the last two qualifiers.
''It is always tiring to hear comments made by people who don't know anything about football.
''I just want to say some people should remain quiet. There are a coach and players who try to do their best.
''There is only one national coach, that's all. It is logical a French team defeats Cyprus.
''So people have to stop the comments about our reactions. If we play Cyprus and we are afraid to score, what will we do in a World Cup against Germany, Brazil or Italy?'' |
