Steve McClaren ended his 251 game era in charge of Middlesbrough on a low tonight as his last game ended in a heavy defeat in the Uefa Cup Final, to Sevilla.
'Boro were outclassed by the spaniards for most of the game but they must take great credit for a fantastic run in one of the top competitions in Europe, and the new England manager must be proud of his time in the North.
Luis Fabiano started the Spaniards on the cup trail when he headed home after 26 minutes but Enzo Maresca takes much of the acclaim with a double in the second half.
Maresca took two contrasting goals, starting with a close range effort after 78 minutes and added Sevillas' third from 20 yards six minutes later.
Sevilla dominated the game but Middlesbrough did have their chances and they may feel hard done by after Mark Viduka was pushed inside the area, with no penalty awarded. A goal at that stage of the game would have evened the spoils with all to play for, but Sevilla immediately picked themselves up and scored their second, minutes later.
Middlesbrough must now look forward and appoint a new manager as McClaren heads off to undertake his new role as England manager, after the World Cup in Germany. |
