Livingston player-manager Paul Lambert has resigned after the Bank of Scotland Premier League defeat by Dunfermline at Almondvale.
The former Celtic and Scotland captain stepped down after the West Lothian club slipped six points behind the Pars at the foot of the table.
The 36-year-old left Celtic Park in the summer to take over from Richard Gough at Livingston.
But, following the 7-0 defeat at Hibernian in midweek, the loss against Dunfermline has left the club in serious danger of relegation and prompted Lambert to step down.
Lambert paid tribute to Livingston owner Pearse Flynn and chief executive Vivien Kyles as he confirmed his departure.
He told BBC Scotland: "As from now, I am no longer the manager of this football club.
"The club have been terrific with me and Vivien Kyles, along with Pearse, have been outstanding towards me.
"Norrie McWhirter (Livi assistant manager) and I gave it our best. It was never easy, but it was terrific to come in.
"But we have made the decision and it is time for somebody else to come in and try to get them through this.
"They are a great bunch of lads to work with here and, if the new man gets the same effort I have been given, and gets a bit of a break, he will be fine.
"The people at the club have been absolutely first class."
Lambert believes a change will benefit the team.
He said: "Livingston have a real chance of staying in the league if someone gets that break Norrie and I never got.
"But that is football. You may be sitting here next week talking to someone else who has seen them jump up a few places."
But he insists his reason for quitting while the club still have a chance of SPL survival will remain private.
Lambert told BBC Scotland: "There is a country mile to go but it remains private why I went.
"This is a results business but the reasons will remain private."
He added: "This will my the first time out of football for a while, but I love the game and the pressure of it. I will never shirk it.
"Sometimes, you have to wait for somebody to lose their job to get on.
"But I was delighted to have the opportunity I was given here."
