Frank Williams has dismissed recent media speculation that his team?s engine partner BMW intends to buy the Sauber team. ?I don?t think they really want to buy Peter Sauber?s team, and I don?t think Peter wants to sell it,? Williams told Italy?s Autosprint magazine.
However, the team boss added that he had no inside knowledge of the details of any negotiations between BMW and Sauber.
?Really, I don?t know what will happen,? he said.
The rumours surfaced partly because BMW is believed to be unhappy with Williams? performance and feels that for several years the chassis has not been a match for the engine, which is still regarded as one of the strongest in Formula 1.
?From what I read in the papers, Mario Theissen says we are not good enough,? said Williams.
?It?s his opinion, and he has the right to express it.
?In fact, we?ve won in every year of our collaboration with them except for the first one, when they had a completely different engine and they had been missing from F1 for a long time.
?In any case, that?s all history now.?
BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen recently denied that he planned to terminate the contract with Williams, but confirmed that he has held talks with Sauber about supplying customer engines for 2006.
