An arrest has been made in the hunt for the killer of former world heavyweight champion Trevor Berbick in Jamaica, it has emerged.
Berbick was found early on Saturday morning face down in a pool of blood with a gaping head wound inflicted by a weapon such as a machete or hatchet in a church courtyard near his home in Port Antonio.
Police have reportedly arrested a suspect and have ruled out robbery as a motive.
The former fighter, thought to be aged 52, was famous for being the last man to face Muhammad Ali and also the boxer against whom Mike Tyson won his first world title aged 20.
Berbick was found at around 5am by a church deacon at the Norwich Baptist Chapel near his home in Port Antonio, according to the Sunday Gleaner in Jamaica.
Senior Detective Sergeant Kenneth Bailey of the Port Antonio Criminal Investigation Branch said: "He reportedly left one of the local night spots between the hours of 1.45 to 2am Saturday and headed for home,.
"The body had four wounds to the back of the head, as he was probably attacked from behind.
"The impression and damage done to the skull have indicated that a machete may have been used by his attacker or attackers to murder him."
Police believe the attack was not a robbery because Berbick was found with cash and no attempt had been made to enter his house a few feet from where he was found.
Former light-heavyweight world champion Glen Johnson, a Jamaican fighter based in Miami who is still active, told the Jamaica Observer: "It's a sad day to hear one of our boxing heroes go down the way Trevor did.
"None of us knows how our passing is going to be and it's just sad to see him going in this way, it is just a bit discouraging."
